INSPECTOR NAKAMURA

About the Project

This project holds a special place in my heart because it is my first ever released game. I made it as a year-long project for my Independent Study Japanese class in my senior year of high school. I did all the level design, Japanese dialogue (proofread by my professor), sound design, and system design and development in RPG Maker MV.ย

It's a top-down puzzle RPG about a man named Inspector Nakamura, who has been called in to investigate a well-established family's heirloom that has gone missing overnight. Upon further inspection, you determine it to be the workings of a famous criminal organization located outside of Tokyo (where you are now), and you start your journey to retrieve the item. But then--twist!--the subway line that leads outside of Tokyo suddenly breaks down. Could it be that criminal organization's doing again? You have to then work with NPCs in different neighborhoods of Tokyo to collect the proper pieces to fix the train and get back on "track" (pun very much intended). Once you venture out to the criminal organization's headquarters, you track down the head boss and (SPOILERS AHEAD) determine that the missing heirloom was actually his to begin with and was stolen multiple generations ago...dun dun DUN.

Though it's a simple game with a linear plot-line, there is a surprising amount of interaction with a myriad of characters and a hefty number of puzzles. Looking back on it now, I'm quite impressed with 17 year old me (even if she wasn't 100% pleased). I did learn a lot of--albeit, simple things--about game programming through this venture, such as how to track completed quests with booleans and how to check those booleans/integer trackers before showing certain dialogues. Nothing crazy, but, hey, we all start somewhere.

If you speak Japanese, give it a play-through, and leave a comment on my Itch.io page!
